The matched land calculation is 16,376,870 ÷ 9,147,420 = 1.7903. The matched total-area calculation is 17,098,246 ÷ 9,833,517 = 1.7388. “Russia is roughly twice the size of the U.S.” works as loose conversation, but it overstates both ratios. For schoolwork, 1.79 by land or 1.74 by total area is the defensible answer.

The land gap is 7,229,450 square kilometers. Picture one complete United States placed inside Russia’s land footprint; space equal to 79.03% of another United States would remain. The total-surface gap is slightly larger in square kilometers, 7,264,729, even though it represents a smaller share of the U.S. total.

There is a small wrinkle in “the fifty states.” Summing the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 Gazetteer land fields for the 50 states, with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico excluded, produces 9,151,480 square kilometers. Against the FAO figure for Russia, the ratio is 1.7895. The Census and FAO totals differ by 4,060 square kilometers, or 0.04% of the U.S. figure, because their source geometry and vintage are different. Both calculations round to 1.79.

Which definition of “big” should a student choose?

Use land area when the question concerns how much ground the countries contain. With total-surface figures from one UN table, the two North American countries total 19,818,187 square kilometers. That exceeds Russia by 2,719,941 square kilometers, or 15.91%. Changing standards changes the decimal; it does not change the ranking.

Why does a Mercator map make Russia look too large?

The Mercator projection preserves local angles by increasing scale toward the poles. In John P. Snyder’s Map Projections—A Working Manual, U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1395, the spacing of parallels is proportional to the secant of latitude. The north-south and east-west scale therefore double at 60° latitude; displayed area grows by the square of that factor, to four times equatorial scale. At the poles, the scale becomes infinite.

Russia occupies far more high-latitude territory than the contiguous United States, so a Mercator-style world map enlarges much of Russia more aggressively. Alaska is enlarged too. The distortion does not invent Russia’s lead. The tabulated land-area ratio remains 1.79, while the visual lead grows beyond that measured ratio.

U.S. Geological Survey cartographer John P. Snyder put the classroom risk plainly. “The great distortion of area on the Mercator projection of the Earth leads to mistaken concepts,” he wrote in Professional Paper 1395. His example was Greenland appearing larger than South America even though Greenland had one-eighth its area.

For a fair visual comparison, open an Equal Earth projection. The 2018 peer-reviewed paper by cartographers Bojan Šavrič of Esri, Tom Patterson of the U.S. National Park Service and Bernhard Jenny of Monash University defines Equal Earth as an equal-area world projection. Equal patches on that map represent equal patches on Earth, wherever they fall.

An equal-area map can repair the impression of relative area formed on Mercator. It cannot preserve every coastline shape, local angle, distance and direction at once; Snyder’s USGS manual states that no projection can be both equal-area and conformal. The correction has a narrow scope. Russia and the United States will occupy the right proportion of map space, while their outlines still undergo projection distortion.

How do Alaska, water, time zones, forests, tundra and density change the picture?

Alaska is why “United States” and “contiguous United States” cannot be swapped quietly. The Census Bureau’s 2024 Gazetteer assigns Alaska 1,479,509 square kilometers of land. Its state records sum to 7,655,336 square kilometers for the 48 contiguous states. Comparing that subtotal with Russia’s FAO land figure gives about 2.14 contiguous United States inside Russia, rather than 1.79 full United States.

Water pulls the published ratio the other way. The UN total-surface ratio is 1.74, below the FAO-based land ratio of 1.79. Inland-water treatment contributes to that change, while differences in agency geometry may contribute too. Shoreline length is no shortcut here; the selected standard decides which inland and coastal waters enter the polygon.

Time zones reveal reach. Russian Federal Law No. 107-FZ lists 11. Section 261 of Title 15 of the U.S. Code divides U.S. territory, including territories beyond the states, into nine standard-time zones. The 50 states occupy six. These are administrative divisions with irregular boundaries, rather than equal slices of land.

Forests make Russia’s physical lead tangible. The World Bank’s 2023 FAO series records 8,153,120 square kilometers of forest in Russia, 49.78% of its land, compared with 3,097,950 square kilometers and 33.87% in the United States. The indicator measures land cover; it does not measure accessibility or settlement.

North of the forest belt, tundra and permafrost further weaken any equation between area and usability. NASA’s Earth Observatory places tundra below the Arctic ice caps across Siberia, Europe and North America; it describes a short growing season, low precipitation and permafrost beneath the surface. The National Snow and Ice Data Center defines permafrost precisely as ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two years. How can this comparison remain reproducible after an update?

Treat the figures like an aerial mosaic whose scale note must travel with every frame. A future reader should be able to reconstruct the ratio without guessing which water, territory or year slipped into it.

  1. Freeze the geographic units. Use the published RUS and USA country records for the main ratio. State separately when the comparison excludes Alaska, the District of Columbia or U.S. territories. Do not add or subtract disputed territory independently of the source’s country unit.
  2. Choose the measurement before opening a map. For land, use the World Bank/FAOSTAT definition that excludes inland water. For total surface, use the UN Demographic Yearbook definition that includes inland water. Never add a land figure to a total-surface figure.
  3. Record the source and data year beside every number. This article’s physical baseline is 2023; its population snapshot is the World Bank’s 2025 midyear estimate. Population can change while the area denominator remains fixed.
  4. Check the picture on Equal Earth. Use the equal-area view to inspect relative footprint after calculating the ratio. Keep Mercator for the tasks it was designed to serve, including constant-bearing navigation, rather than visual area measurement.

The date label matters most for population. Replacing Russia’s 2025 count while leaving the U.S. count at 2023 would create a ratio that belongs to no single moment. Area revisions also happen when agencies update source geometry or reporting rules, as the 4,060-square-kilometer difference between the World Bank and Census U.S. land figures demonstrates.
